Lowriders
By Summers
PG 1
You may have noticed that over the last
year or so we have given much attention to the bike scene in and around
the Minneapolis, St. Paul area. Wondering why? Well, as I have mentioned
before this area is one of the hottest and fastest growing areas for custom
cycle activity in the country and its not letting up. New shops seem to
be opening weekly catering to the needs of everything from dressers to
all out drag machinery and full customs.
Of these fresh shops one of those to establish
immediate national recognition is the "Lowriders By Summers" facility in
Minneapolis. Tom Summers, the shop's owner has been around the custom scene
for many a year and when he decided to "open house" he did it in a big
way. Tom's idea was to coordinate the opening with the release of some
really outstanding piece. Well, the shop opened before the bike was ready
but when readers of several publications caught a glimpse of the Summers
"Fan Dancer" Honda the demand for Tom's talents and the shop's services
soared.
Unlike most custom shops in the area Summers
handles "Oriental" machines only which eliminates a lot of hassles from
the start. While Tom offers a complete line of custom hard to find accessories
the two areas he aims his talents at are complete construction and custom
paint.
Finding it much easier to "do it himself'
than to hassle with others Tom spent many years designing and painting
his many show winning creations and has evolved his painting talents to
the edge of perfection. As for the construction end of the business Summers
main drive is toward reliable street customs. However, if you've seen machinery
like the "Fan Dancer" Honda you know quite well that for a price Tom is
quite capable of producing just about anything your mind might be able
to conjure up.
It has been our intent to preview at least
one new shop monthly and it is an honor to bring our readers facilities
like that at Summers. As you well know it is often difficult to track down
that one special part and we've found that putting these shops together
has brought many builders and facilities together, often when neither knew
the other existed. If you know of a shop that offers quality work and accessories
in your area have them get in touch with us and we'll let the world know!

stuffed into a dusty corner of the shop really put the Summers shop on
the map. Debuted in Daytona a couple of years back it has been featured
in numerous world wide publications. The "Dancer" is a fine example of
quality workmanship put to show use.)

location spray booth which is used for painting of everything from dressers
and touring machines to full customs. Here Tom applies a multi colored
candy job to rather lame BMW tank.)

Tom's facility is manned and equipped to handle the many orders received
for complete fabrication of custom machines.)
(RIGHT-Snatch, Tom's latest show endeavor
carved a wide path at the Rat's Hole show in Florida this year. Watch for
it soon in Custom Cycle.)
(Above- Super fine street worthy machines
like this rigid Kawasaki are the backbone of the shop's work. People in
the area like to ride their machines and Summers offers a wide variety
of ways to go custom.) |
