Chrome
Spin On Oil Filter
This really isn't any obscure
tip or idea. More of a headz-up to something thats' become available. Something
that many of us have been trying to track down for a long, long time.
Back in the 70s and 80s a
couple suppliers offered chrome spin on oil filters to replace the finned
canister and cartridge on the 750 Honda, as well as other Honda models
that used the same setup. They disappeared in the early 80s and the only
ones I could get were the NOS ones that would pop up on Ebay from time
to time.. Pretty soon, even that source seemed to dry up as well.
The stock cover wasn't all
that terrible looking, I guess. But, it just didn't have that smooth look
I've always wanted. The center bolt would sometimes seize or become rounded
trying to get it off. Having to change the inner cartridge was a
messy situation with the spring and washer inside to keep track off and
all.... Ugghh .. what a pain in the ass..
Then I started having the fins
turned down on them and they didn't look bad. But, it still that bolt sticking
out of the end and it was still a pain in the ass. There's been a few nice
looking adapters for car filters made, but I just couldn't bring myself
to using one. I've posted a pic below of an adapter with a car filter on
a Gold Wing.
They use the automotive type
filters that are a bit longer and with the thickness of the adapter tend
to stick out too far. Most all of the car filters are orange, blue, black
or white and full of printing.. However .. there are chrome automotive
filters available which look decent. But, they still stick out a bit once
they're mounted. Some guys actually use the really long filters on them
too.. man.. that looks like their zipper is down with that huge filter
sticking out between the pipes...lolol I've also used finned covers for
the auto filters too... I would turn down the stock finned cover and slip
these covers over them. But that too just stuck out too far..
I've found that they've started
making the shorter chrome spin on filters again. These are direct replacements
for the stock canister,Just like the ones back in the 80s.
I've been using them for a bit
and they're a perfect alternative to that standard old finned cover that
we've always used.. Of course, they make it way easier to change the oil
and filter too.
You can get them at
www.cb750supply.com for $16 but, they do have a $35 minimum purchase. I've
had a couple orders and they ship quick and seem like a good place
to deal with for exclusively SOHC CB 750 parts.
It's about time someone
started bringing back the kool shit that used to be available ..
